A teen from the Congo hoped to find a better life for himself by stowing away in the engine nacelle of a Hawker 125 business jet. Fortunately for everybody involved, he was found.

Geez, next time just try the landing gear

That would have worked well I'm sure. What did he think was going to happen? Even if he could hold on, how would he breathe at elevation?

That’s not the best idea either. This happened in 1970, when an Australian teen fell from the landing gear of a DC-8 bound for Japan.

Not to generalize, but if you’re a child trying to escape Congo in a jet engine , you probably haven’t had too much of an education.

He probably didn’t think of it

Exactly. It is heartbreaking to know that that level of ignorance could happen, much less be so prevalent .

One thing that surprised me in that video was seeing ‘Air Afrique’ on the hangar. I remember falling  in love with that simple double green stripe back when I was young and bought a book about the early 747s. Beautiful.

The landing gear people sometimes get crushed, sometimes freeze, sometimes pass out and fall when the gear opens, sometimes fall before the gear gets pulled up, but sometimes they do make it! Really sad that anyone is that desperate though.

I think it’s a less desperate move than we realize. I think it’s a matter of total ignorance about how aircraft work, how high they fly, and the effects of the weather conditions at altitude. The kid sitting in the intake of a jet engine is an excellent example. He had no idea how those engines actually work.

People who don’t know the machinery are just hitching a ride like they would in the back of a truck.

Ugh, poor kid. I can’t imagine how shitty his life is to consider this as a viable escape attempt .

Ground crew’s gonna have to tear that engine apart and check for FOD now I’d bet.

I’m thinking there isn’t much room up where the gear retracts on a Hawker 125.

Even with the gear down, you ain’t gettin’ up in there.
